Traumatic Brain Injury

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is sudden trauma that results in damage and alters the normal function of the brain. This injury can have a number of different causes such as a bump to the head, violent jolt or shaking, object piercing the skull or even from no direct blow to the head at all, such as when an individual suffers whiplash.

The severity of a TBI can range from mild, moderate to severe, and the vast majority of TBI cases are diagnosed as mild, more commonly referred to as a concussion. While the severity of these cases is called “mild,” don’t let the term fool you, it does not mean by definition, it will have a mild impact on your life. A person suffering from a TBI often suffers from a wide range of both physical and psychological effects. These symptoms are not necessarily something that will go away quickly and can be life altering.

Having a TBI can be very isolating and can affect everything from the smallest daily tasks to causing severe, life changes. Sometimes it can often feel that a TBI has changed “Everything.”

Some Symptoms of a Mild TBI Can Be:

  • Loss of Consciousness for a Few Seconds or Minutes
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Sensitivity to Light &/or Sound
  • Poor Judgement
  • Impulsivity or Difficulties in Self-Control
  • Slowed Performance

Some Symptoms of a Moderate to Severe TBI Can Include the Above As Well As:

  • Loss of Consciousness for Several Minutes or Hours
  • Persistent Headaches
  • Difficulty Controlling Emotions
  • Slurred &/or Rapid Speech
  • “Fog” State
  • Loss of Coordination
  • Memory Gaps
  • Timeline Confusion
  • Changes in Esteem
  • Changes in Personality
  • Depression
  • Changes in Sexual Behavior

Not all head traumas result in a TBI, but after any head trauma, it’s important to be properly examined by a healthcare physician. Left undiagnosed, even “mild” side effects can be very dangerous to an individual as well as other parties.
